AMJAD - NEW WORK
/ LA LA LA HUMAN STEPS
Johnny Ranger first met Édouard Lock when he was invited to remix the films from Lock’s choreographic repertoire for the company’s 30th-anniversary event at Excentris. For Johnny In his early twenties, companies to the like of La La La Human Steps, along with Carbone 14 and Robert Lepage’s work had been highly influential for him, making the opportunity and honor to reinterpret and play with their striking imagery of their archives a true delight.
For the event, Ranger projected fragments of Lock’s films onto jars and glass objects, then re-filmed them in different contexts to create a layered, dreamlike montage. This material was ultimately presented as a large-scale projection on a giant origami sculpture suspended from the ceiling in the hall of Ex-centris.
Lock responded enthusiastically to the results and later invited Ranger to contribute to his new creation Amjad. The production required video content for three circular screens appearing at key moments in the performance. Lock was seeking imagery that could evoke inner flesh and other abstract textures—an aesthetic challenge that Ranger successfully resolved, delivering visuals that met the conceptual needs of the piece.
Ranger also contributed additional video material to Lock’s subsequent production, New Work.
