Itaparica Residencies

This project exists as a video dance research experiment and is situated at the intersection of somatic memory and digital video manipulations, born from two different residencies many years apart to the Sacatar Institute on the island of Itaparica, Brazil. The work explores the invisible energetic threads that bind the human form in relation to one another and to its natural or virtual environments. Through a repeated collaborative process with local choreographers and the dancers of the Rosangela Silvestre school, movement was captured and reimagined as a series of calligraphic type movement & expressions—a bridge between the intimate physicality of the body of brazilian artists, in relation to western filters aesthetic and outsider editing of textures within the Bahian landscape. Highlighting in the way the body from Black culture expresses itself confroting our own imaginary to the inventivess of improvisational movements emerging from the dancers when put in a intentional minimal frame work and settings with costumes reinterpretation from their culture.

Developed in partnership with crochet artist Olek, the project evolved through on-site stagings and conceptual costume design. The final output is a was a series of videos and photography, a non-linear journey where organic textures meet minimalist electronic design. This body of work does not merely document a location; it constructs a fragmented, open-ended narrative that mirrors the daily encounters and "invisible realities" of the island, presenting a balanced equilibrium between mind, body, and the surrounding atmosphere.
